Training

EJ&E Rail yard:

Training at the EJ&E was a mock drill of an Anhydrous Ammonia leak. It began as a Co. 4 response and evolved into East Dist. Still alarm and then a Hazmat Team callout. EJ&E personnel acted as victims for the first responding units. Hazmat technicians then had to do a rescue from the top of a railroad tank car. This was a good drill for the team and for EJ&E safety personnel working with JFD.

Rt. 66 Drag stripMulti Agency Response to Terrorist Incident :

Training for this Drill started with several meetings to plan such a large scale exercise. The  main goals of this drill were to see how well the different agencies could work together to reach a common goal. Interaction between different teams, multiple radio frequencies, defining roles, and evaluating performance were some of the many challenges everyone needed to meet. The drill went well with 4 different teams making multiple entries. Joliet Fire Hazmat and Will County Hazmat worked together as one of the teams. Several pieces of test equipment were used to help identify different agents used as terrorist devices. The civil support team from Peoria used their mobile lab for further testing.

Joliet Police were involved with the ILEAS members who initially secured the scene. In all 15 agencies participated. We met for a final critique on Dec. 18, and have worked out an improved overall response plan for this type of incident.

The participating teams agreed we need to continue to have more of these multi agency response exercises in the future.

The team also did off site training at Interstate Warehouse, Hudd Distribution service, and a response to terrorism drill with Joliet Police ILEAS at Chicagoland Speedway.
