In the fire investigation field, there are four generally accepted causes for fire. They include:

  • Incendiary – Deliberately or intentionally set fires (arson),
  • Accidental – Not deliberately set,
  • Natural – Caused by lightening or other natural phenomena,
  • Undetermined – Unable to establish a probable cause due to the severity of fire or missing indicators.
