F.A.S.T. Kids Program
(Fire Awareness Safety Team)
The Fire Awareness Safety Team, FAST Kids, was established in 1996 to convey the message of fire prevention and fire awareness to all 4 th graders throughout the City of Joliet. Each year a Joliet Firefighter is assigned to a 4 th grade class to teach the children about fire safety. The program runs for 5 weeks and culminates with the children learning about what it takes to become a Joliet Firefighter. They learn about the firefighter’s job, his daily duties, and have the chance to try on some real fire gear.
The cornerstone of any successful program is consistency. We celebrated our eleventh anniversary in 85 classrooms but the number of children was
down slightly (2,398-2,320) in 2006. Our program, targeting the fourth grade, has been presented as a PowerPoint presentation since 2003. Each year we attempt to improve the curriculum, and 2006 was the best exampleWith the use of new video streams, each lesson over the six-week program motivated each student as never before. A special thankyou to Lieutenant Chuck Willard for all his work on the video presentations must be noted. His work on the introduction and the Our Lady of Angles fire are magnificent.
The success the F.A.S.T. Kids has reached is
soley due to the firefighters who work so tirelessly
to bring this program to the 30 elementary buildings.
